THINGS TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU BUY A POPCORN POPPER...

It is true that popcorn poppers are healthier because they use less oil and preservatives than prepackaged popcorn. Popcorn poppers can also cut costs in the long run, because it's less expensive to popcorn at home than to buy prepackaged or microwavable popcorn.

The type of popcorn popper you choose is really a matter of personal choice. If you're calorie conscious, you may opt for a hot air popper or a microwave popper, either of which can be used with or without oil. If calorie counting isn't as important to you, then you may opt for a richer, buttery experience and may choose an electric or stove-top popper.

It's important to keep the popcorn at the right temperature. High heat can toughen the popcorn, while low heat can make smaller, drier popcorn. If you're using a stove-top popper, medium heat is best. Likewise, if using a microwave popper, start with the lowest heat setting and gradually increase the time and temperature when to find an optimal setting. Electric and hot air poppers -- which are simply plugged in or turned on -- have automatic temperature control, leaving less room for human error.

You can cut calories by using less oil and if you're popping with oil, you can usually get away with using less than the directions indicate.

Experiment with flavorings. You can make a delicious low-calorie snack by adding cayenne pepper, herbs or hard grated cheese to air-popped popcorn.

One last point to remember is that no popper is completely safe. All of these poppers generate steam, which can cause burns. Microwave poppers may also heat up intensely in the microwave--more intensely than you may expect. The bottom line: Handle these products with care.

Presto 04820 PopLite Hot Air Popper White
When you plug in Presto's PopLite Hot Air Popper, the party begins. In less than 2-1/2 minutes you'll have up to 18 cups--two large bowlfuls--of fluffy popcorn with virtually no unpopped kernels. The real benefit though is because the machine uses hot air instead of oil, the resulting snack is healthier and lower in calories. Butter lovers don't despair, though! You can add butter; in fact, the 1/2-cup measuring cup on top of the popper doubles as a butter melter. All you do is simply put in the desired amount of margarine or butter in the cup (room temperature is best), and it melts from the heat produced during the popping process. The clear plastic cover and cup, which must stay on during popping so the popped corn doesn't fly all over the room, is easily removed for hand cleaning with warm, soapy water. No other clean-up is required, so cleaning is a breeze. The popper's small compact size makes it easy to store right on the counter or in a cabinet. The popper measures 14 by 9 by 6-1/2 inches, and is identical to Presto's Orville Redenbacher Hot Air Corn Popper except for color and logo. Presto covers the PopLite with a two-year warranty.

Wabash Valley Farms 25008 Whirley-Pop Stovetop Popcorn Popper
The Original Whirley-Pop stovetop hand-crank popcorn popper brings it all back with its one-of-a-kind design. You can enjoy light, flavorful popcorn (makes up to six quarts) that you prepare yourself right on the stovetop in just three minutes. This stove-top popcorn popper brings out the movie popcorn lover in all of us! The patented stirring mechanism keeps the popcorn from sticking or burning and yields up the best popcorn outside of the Paramount! Big, plump kernels that can be soaked with butter and covered with salt (if that's your style) and eaten with a side of Coke and you'll start renting videos and staying at home on Friday nights! This popcorn popper is made from sturdy aluminum and has a clip-on lid with a nice, stay-cool handle. The turn crank on the handle spins the stirring mechanism inside the popper which keeps the kernels moving so they don't burn. Steam vents in the lid keep the popcorn moist. Included is a booklet with instructions and recipes, as well as popcorn history and lore. All in all, a nice product.

West Bend 82306X Stir Crazy 6-Quart Popcorn Popper
This modernized version of a classic favorite makes 6 quarts of popcorn quickly and easily. West Bend improved on the classic corn popper design by adding a motorized stirring rod which ensures that every single kernel pops, every time. It only takes about five minutes and the Sir Crazy Popcorn Popper delivers 6 quarts of perfectly popped corn using one tablespoon of oil per 1/4 cup corn. So easy to clean, too! Just wipe it out with a sponge and you're done! If you'd like a bit more butter flavor, just add a bit of butter into the butter well and let it melt over the popcorn while it pops. Another great feature, the plastic cover doubles as a serving bowl, so when the popcorn is done popping, just turn over the lid and enjoy the popcorn fresh and hot and good to the last pop!
